- AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER (ASD)

Meaning:
Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a developmental disorder that affects communication and behavior such as persistent challenges in social interaction, speech and non-verbal communication, and restricted/repetitive behaviors. Although autism can be diagnosed at any age, it is said to be a “developmental disorder” because symptoms generally appear in the first two years of life.
Symptoms:
- Difficulty with communication and interaction with other people
- Restricted and repetitive patterns of behaviors, interests or activities
- Difficulty making eye contact
- Difficulty instinctively empathizing with others
- Difficulty starting or maintaining a conversation
Cure and how to take care of the person:
- Several groups of medications like atypical antipsychotics and mood stabilizers are used to treat behavioral problems such as temper tantrums and aggression associated with ASD.
- Behavioral therapy has been found to be most helpful in treating children with ASD. Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) and Treatment and Education of Autistic and Related Communication Handicapped Children (TEARCHC) focus on language development, social skills and appropriate behaviors. These are all supportive and skill building forms of therapy designed to help children with ASD.
A couple of tips for those caring for ASD patients:
- Learn as much as possible about autism spectrum disorder
- Provide consistent structure and routine
- Connect with other parents of children with autism
- Seek professional help for specific concerns
Since childhood, Dan Aykroyd has struggled with symptoms of Asperger’s Syndrome (autism with higher functioning).

He has never permitted his medical challenges to stand in his way, and his dedication to following his dreams led him to a career as actor, producer, comedian, musician, and filmmaker. He’s been nominated for the Academy Award for Best Supporting Actor, starred in his own sitcom, and is a co-founder of the House of Blues chain of music venues.
